Console Control Computer (CCC)

 

The main processor of the  Classic Organ Works (Legacy) pipe organ control system.

 

Description

The Console Control Computer (CCC) controls all of the functions found on an organ console. It reduces the complexity of pipe organs by eliminating all traditional coupler relays, or diode couplers, replacing them with electronic action, while providing full combination action, keying, and coupling functions. In particular, the wiring between the organ console and chambersis reduced to a single 6-pair cable! The numerous features of the CCC make it an extremely flexible system, easily accomodating any type of organ - even multiple console installations. 

The flexibility is derived from the microprocessor-based nature of the CCC. As such, it can be programmed to provide any complement of General and Divisional pistons, Cancels, Coupler Reversibles, Manual-to-Pedal Piston Couplers, Lighted-Reversible pistons (for special control functions such as Zimbelstern, etc.) and any other special functions that can be logically defined. It has multiple lockable memories, multiple programmable Sforzandos (Full Organ), Ventil reversibles, a programmable Registration Sequencer (with numeric display), and a multi-memory programmable Crescendo pedal (with numeric display). 128 pistons, 192 stops, 4 manuals plus pedals, and 5 expressionshoes, can be accommodated without any add-on expansion boards. Combinations and set-up data are stored in non-volatile memory (no battery back-up) to retain data. Many functions (such as specific stops affected by a Ventil or by a Divisional piston) can be configured (by the organist or organbuilder) directly from the console. 

The Console Control Computer can directly connect to an array of stop push-buttons (reversible) with LED indicator lights, lighted (incandescent lamp) rocker tabs or drawknobs (lamp-driver board required), or to conventional dual-magnetic stop tabs or drawknobs (magnet driver boards required). The combination of CLASSIC lighted-rocker tab stops, the Console Control Computer (CCC) and Pipe Control Computer (PCC) provides a simple and cost-effective control system for pipe organs. In a tracker-action pipe organ, the Console Control Computer can provide the combination action only and MIDI functionality, as well as the ability to connect a remote electric console. Stop-switch inputs, piston inputs, and key-switch inputs can be matrixed (to save wiring) or parallel wired through Switch-Input Boards (SIB's) which allow 12V input switching on a wire-per-key basis.

The Console Control Computer uses a very advanced and sophisticated program to control dual-magnetically-controlled stop inputs, which energizes the stop action magnets only for stops which must be moved. It also automatically lengthens the current pulse to any stops which are sluggish. There is no delay when pressing pistons rapidly in succession, since the new registration is sent to the Pipe Control Computer instantly, even if the stop knobs have not yet moved!

The Console Control Computer scans all keyboards and the pedalboard and processes key information in accordance with any active couplers. The program can be configured to provide inter- and intra-manual couplers at Unison, Sub, and Super, pitch levels between any divisions on the organ. "Floating divisions", which are not directly associated with any physical keyboard, can also be defined. Add-on expansion boards are available if more than five manuals or second-touchare required.

A number of other features associated with key-data processing are also included. An "Automatic Pedal" function is available, which plays the Pedal division note corresponding to the lowest note played on the lower octaves of a manual. High-note (melody) couplers are also available. These are useful on organs installed in smaller churches where accomplished organists may not always be available. A transposer, controlled by a rotary switch (or by UP/DOWN multi-function pistons), allows transposition of the organ up 1-6, or down 1-5 semi-tones. For theatre organs, pizzicato couplers, sustain/sustenuto, and full internal processing of traps and effects, are available.

The Console Control Computer requires only a single isolated contact per key or stop. Keyboard wiring is reduced to six octave-feed wires per keyboard, and a 12-note return bus common to all keyboards. Optical key-switch assemblies, with or without velocity sensing (for MIDI), are available. Switch Input Boards (SIB-1x) are available if it is more convenient to parallel-wire the keyboards (SIB-1K), stops (SIB-1S), or pistons (SIB-1P), with a +12V common. Due to the simplicity of installation, the overall console cost is greatly reduced. A minimal system may include only the Console Control Computer (CCC), a Pipe Control Computer (PCC), and magnet driver boards (PDB) for each rank or division.

The Console Control Computer includes several MIDI IN/OUT PORTS, which permit the connection of a stand-alone or personal-computer-based Sequencer to record and play back performances, and also allow MIDI-based sound equipment (expanders, synthesizers, drum machines, etc.) to be controlled from the organ stops and keys.

The Sequencer MIDI output provides note on/off data, with each keyboard or division on a separate MIDI channel. Expression data is also sent on appropriate channels. Stop data is output as a block of "System Exclusive" data whenever there is a major change (piston pressed, etc.), or as controller data if stops are moved manually. The Sequencer MIDI input will respond to data on the same channels and sound whatever stops are on. The Registration is updated when SysEx or controller data is received. Note that registration can still be changed during playback, and that an organist can "play-along" with the MIDI playback. The playback will include all pipes, electronic organ stops, and "MIDI-stops", exactly as recorded previously. "STANDARD MIDI FILE" sequencers such as the Roland Model SB-55, Yamaha MDF3, and Viscount RD-70 are ideal record/playback devices.

The Expander MIDI "port(s)" is/are primarily intended for attaching MIDI-based voice generators. (An expander is a synthesizer, usually without a keyboard, which produces a variety of musical sounds, in response to keying information supplied through a MIDI input.) This allows the organist to "expand" the tonal resources of the organ, simply by plugging in any MIDI-compatible sound generator. Sounds (voices) available on the "Expander" can be assigned to stop tabs on the organ console, so that these "MIDI-stops" may be controlled in the same manner as pipe-ranks, or electronic stops. The MIDI stops will respond to the couplers (and transposer) in exactly the same way as other organ stops in the same division. The "MIDI" stops can be programmed to send a "set-up" message to the Expander when the stop is turned on, to select the voice (patch), adjust volume, etc. The Roland JV-1010, SC-55, EMU Proteus, and other similar units can easily be connected. EMU-8200 GS-MIDI(TM) boards are available for permanent installation in pipe or electronic organs. An additional (or alternative) Expander MIDI output is available on the PCC in the pipe chamber.
