Optical Keyswitch Boards

 

Update older keyboards suffering from poor switch contacts with the latest optical switching technology! 

 

Description

These boards can be fitted to most wood-core keyboards. A simple shutter interrupts an infra-red beam in a small, solid-state, optical component. For the ultimate in reliability, the board contains no rubbing or contacting metal parts. The boards connect directly to the Console Control Computer with a minimum of wiring.

Several Optical Keyswitch boards are available depending on the type of keyboard and position of the pivot and springs as indicated in this document. A metal rail kit may be purchased separately to mount the circuit boards to the keyboard. The kit includes all the required hardware.

OPKYPR-1 (A stand-alone Parallel output rear mount switching system)

This set of three circuit boards converts key-press data into parallel +12V electrical signals using optical switches. The OPKYPR-1 is ideal for keyboards with centre-pivot keys. It eliminates unreliable mechanical switch contacts and can be interfaced to +12V common control systems or +12V common switching systems. It is a standalone product that can be connected to different systems.

The OPKYPR-1 has two circuit boards which handle 24 notes each, and one circuit board that handles 13 notes for a total of 61 notes.

OPKEY-2

Board-set designed to be mounted under the keys in the same position as a normal contact rail. Metal shutters (like "contact" plates) attached to the underside of the keys, act as shutters, to interrupt a light beam. Easy adjustment of the firing point is possible from above the key, via an adjustment screw which passes through the key. In many cases, existing contact plates can be used, when retrofitting old keyboards. These optical switch boards are electrically interchangeable with normal matrixed keyswitch wiring, and connect to the CCC with an 18-wire cable (12 notes + 6 octaves).

OPKEY-3

Board-set designed to be mounted under the back of the keys behind the balance rail. These operate in reverse, i.e., they sense a key ON when the shutter rises up out of the optical switch. These can be provided mounted on an aluminum angle rail, for easy mounting in new or existing keyboards.

OPVKS-2

Board-set includes an on-board processor which is capable of scanning the optical keyswitches at high speed, and detecting the velocity at which a key is pressed. This information is sent to the CCC which sends the velocity information along with the note-on messages to any attached MIDI based sound modules.

The OPVKS2 board-set is used to add velocity sensing to an organ. OPVKS2 equipped keyboards can share a common 10-wire cable which connects them all to the CCC. 

Normally, the OPVKS2 is mounted underneath the keys in front of the balance (pivot) beam. When the key is depressed, the shutters move into the sensors to activate the notes.

OPVKS3

Board-set includes an on-board processor which is capable of scanning the optical keyswitches at high speed, and detecting the velocity at which a key is pressed. The OPVKS3 board-set is physically interchangeable with the OPKEY3 board-set, so can be used to add velocity sensing to an organ, which previously had OPKEY3 boards installed. All OPVKS3 equipped keyboards share a common 10-wire cable which connects them to the CCC.

OPVKS-4

Board-set includes an on-board processor which is capable of scanning the optical keyswitches at high speed, and detecting the velocity at which a key is pressed. The OPVKS4 board-set is used to add velocity sensing to an organ. OPVKS4 equipped keyboards can share a common 10-wire cable which connects them all to the CCC. 

Normally, the OPVKS4 is for short keyboards where there is insufficient room in the front. As such, it mounts underneath the keys at the rear of a keyboard and close to the pivots where the key travel is reduced. The key shutters move out of the sensors to activate the notes. 

The OPVKS4 board is also used when second-touch keying is required. In this case, the OPVKS4 provides the first touch (with velocity-sensing) while an OPKEY2 provides the second touch in which the firing point if further down.

OPVKM-2 & 4

Board-set includes an on-board processor which is capable of scanning the optical keyswitches at high speed, and detecting the velocity at which a key is pressed. This information is sent to the CCC via MIDI which sends the velocity information along with the note-on messages to any attached MIDI based sound modules.

The OPVKM-2 board-set is used to provide reliable keyswitching with velocity sensing to an organ. OPVKM-2 connects to the CCC via a MIDI cable, or to the new Maestro LCCU via USB. The board can also scan all the pistons on the associated keyslip and send piston info to the CCC or LCCU via the same MIDI/USB connection as the key data.  This saves separate wiring for pistons.

OPVKM-4 is mounted underneath the keys behind the balance (pivot) beam. When the key is depressed, the shutters move out of the sensors to activate the notes.
