How to Build an Organ Workstation
Introduction

A common stumbling block for organists looking to put together an organ with our MIDI keyboards and pedal board is how to go about supporting the keyboards above the pedal board for an AGO-compliant organ.

There are a number of possible solutions:

  • design and build a custom console
  • rebuild a used console
  • find a suitable desk

The first two solutions are not always practical. Although building your own console is quite rewarding, it requires a great deal of time - time that could be spent playing the organ! We'll discuss sourcing and rebuilding used consoles in another article.

We have searched high and low for the perfect desk, and thus far, the best we have found is the "Jerker Computer Table" from Ikea (www.ikea.com), which is widely available and sold for approximately CDN$149 in Canada. If you do not live near an Ikea store, the unit can be purchased online and shipped to your door.

Meeting AGO Specifications

Unfortunately, the unit is not wide enough to accommodate an AGO compliant pedal board. A pedal board will not fit in between the desk's legs. However, a supporting platform can be constructed for $50.

The desk's adjustable surface height makes it possible to meet the standard's keyboard position requirements. The table is sufficiently deep to accommodate the keyboards and a PC, and the shelf will support a computer screen and two reasonably sized speakers. With the platform, the unit will fit into a space approximately 5' x 5'.

The following drawings illustrate how to configure the desk for the proper dimensions:

Building a Platform

These platforms are low cost designs that can be assembled in an afternoon from materials available at your local lumber store. To improve their appearance, they can be upholstered with carpet.

Two Island Design

The two island design uses less material and is easier to ship.

Single Platform

The single platform design is built from a 5' x 4' sheet of 3/4" thick plywood and 5 - 2" x 4" boards cut to 4' lengths. Many lumber stores provide sawing services if you do not have home workshop. The whole unit can be assembled with a hammer and a handful of nails.

The Final Product

A true organ workstation! This setup is relatively easy to move, ideal for students, and perfect for small spaces.
